Breaking The Cycle Of Violence - Friday, June 20, 2008

The City of Opa-Locka introduced new crime strategies on Thursday in targeted communities in an effort for law enforcement and regional community organizations to get a handle on crime.
The city is calling it "Project Turnaround", aimed at curbing crime in key areas. It's an initiative crime victims welcome.  "I felt terrible when someone invaded my home; it's just terrible," said Maggie Walker of Opa-Locka.

Opa-Locka officers will join forces with Miami and Miami-Dade police neighborhood enforcement teams and prosecutors.  They'll target problems in high crime areas and apartment complexes.  They'll also step up efforts to curb illegal drug activity at such places as the city's nearly 40 convenience stores.  CBS4 joined one operation two weeks ago headed by the division of alcohol beverages and tobacco.

"Let me make it clear. These individuals have plagued the city for far too long," said Lt. Joe Schillaci of the City of Miami Police.

Ed Harris of the community relations board added, "We have the resources to get these knuckleheads off the streets."  One goal is to do a better job of identifying habitual offenders and targeting them for high priority prosecutions, making sure the most serious charges are filed in court
