Rose Tydus was elected to the office of Commissioner of the City of Opa-locka in November 2000. She also served as Vice Mayor during that term. Re-elected in November 2004, She currently serves as City Commissioner with her term ending November 2008. Tydus has been referred to by many as “the Commissioner with the voice of reason.” Her areas of responsibility include Library Services; Beautification; Parks and Recreation, where she serves as liaison to the city’s Community Relations, Recreation & Activities Advisory Board.
Prior to being elected to the City of Opa-locka Commission, Commissioner Tydus was noted as Opa-locka’s first African-American City Clerk (1976-1984), also heralding the first African-American City Clerk in Miami-Dade County.
Her exemplary work ethic, commitment, compassion for people, love for God and the performing arts has enabled Tydus to serve in various capacities in the church community, government and in the field of entertainment. Through the years, she has held a number of positions that allowed her to hone her skills managing the social and evangelistic side of Christian organizations and other social service agencies.
For 16 years, Tydus was the Executive Director of the Opa-locka Rescue Mission, a non-profit faith-based organization that provided hope and social services to needy families and the homeless. She also assumed the role of Administrator and Youth Director at Stanton Memorial Baptist Church in North Miami, Florida. As Youth Director, Ms. Tydus developed and implemented programs that enhanced the social, recreation, spiritual and educational skills of at-risk youth, to increase their ability to become productive and responsible adults. She is currently serving as Director of First Choice Women’s Center, North Dade Branch.
Tydus’ experience in the performing arts as a professional dancer, singer and writer has enabled her to write, produce and host numerous broadcasts for public television, including, “Black Folk Songs” and “The Gospel & All That Jazz.” Her performing arts experience has enabled her to utilize her talents as a community service. As a motivational and inspirational speaker, Tydus performs at public school assemblies and for church youth groups promoting abstinence, positive lifestyle and academic excellence. Tydus is also a gospel recording artist with a noted CD, “Time and Seasons.” She also performs at local and distant penal institutions, delivering a message of hope and reform for inmates. She has appeared on numerous Christian television programs.
Ms. Tydus’ versatility and humane character has contributed greatly to her ability to communicate, facilitate and lead in a very unique and effective manner as an elected official.
Commissioner Tydus has peppered her exemplary career with a number of professional affiliations including serving as a council member of Governor Bush’s Front porch Initiative, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Miami Baptist Association Finance Committee, Dolphin Stadium Family Fall Festival Committee, and Women in Municipal Government.
